Keep the Line Moving Newsletter - January 2024

Welcome!

The Keep the Line Moving podcast and this newsletter focus on giving you a leadership and inspirational edge as seen through our core principles in curiosity, storytelling and self-awareness. These principles are also featured in our workshops, coaching, content creation and consulting.

In an effort to unify our message, you may have noticed that we have now named this newsletter The Keep the Line Moving Newsletter.

Let’s make 2024 a year to learn and grow as leaders.

This Week’s Focus

Self-Awareness is step one in leading people.

What would you say if you were asked to summarize yourself as a leader in one sentence?

Well, that is one of the main questions that I ask during our workshops and also to my podcast guests as part of the All-Star Moments. Here are some thought provoking answers from our well established leaders as part of the Best of Season One episode a few weeks ago.

“A point guard that tries to make others better.”

“Demanding but loving.”

“Passionate, loud, apologetic, and positive.”

“Mindful, empathetic, but hard driving at the same time.”

“… I think it’s easy to lose sight of what someone is capable of but I like to always say, ‘treat them as if they’re already who they’re capable of becoming.’”

“Tough but big-hearted.”

“A servant leader.”

“A leader has to be a motivator, you have to have empathy, you have to be a great listener, and you have to be able to pull people with you.”

“I led people with dedication and trust and as a result, they never wanted to let me down.”

Feel free to message us your answer to this question!

Leadership Observation

The 80th Annual ABCA Convention

Last weekend, we were invited to be part of podcast row for the 80th annual American Baseball Coaches Association convention in Dallas. We had non-stop conversations at our booth. I could not believe how many people wanted to talk about leadership and culture building. We posted several podcasts from the convention this week as part of our first ever “Keep the Line Moving – Coaches Week”.

Here are my top five takeaways from those many conversations, podcast interviews and the coaches’ clinics.

Top Five Takeaways from the 80th Annual ABCA Convention

  1. Coaching is always evolving (new technology, transfer portal, etc.), and successful coaches adapt.
  2. A winning culture takes time and effort, not just great players.
  3. A winning culture is about connecting with your players and gaining an understanding of who they are and how they best take in information and coaching.
  4. Similar to business and life, providing the ‘why’ we do things to your players is valuable now more than ever.
  5. The best players and coaches learn from their failures and are able to focus on the next at-bat, pitch, play, inning and game.

What we are working on…

We have some interesting workshops coming up and several more planned in the coming weeks and months. The next one is the SMPTE Student Leadership Workshop as part of The 2024 Silicon Valley Video Summit at The Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California on Tuesday, January 23rd.

We will focus on creating a career path, goal setting, collaboration, leadership, self-leadership, self-awareness, communicating effectively, the keys to developing a growth mindset and much more.

If you are a college student and will be in the Bay Area that day, come join us. Spaces are limited!
